November 2, 1999 Lil Wayne's debut studio album, Tha Block Is Hot, shoots to #1 on the Billboard albums chart and goes on to sell 1.4 million copies worldwide.

October 3, 1999 Tom Jones charts a UK #1 album for the first time in 25 years when his set Reload hits the top spot. Joining the 59-year-old Jones on the album are Robbie Williams, Stereophonics, Barenaked Ladies and the Pretenders.

September 21, 1999 Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails earns their first #1 album when The Fragile debuts at the top spot, easily outpacing all other competitors in a market crowded with new releases.

September 5, 1998 Nu metal emerges as Korn's album Follow The Leader hits #1 in America. The next year, albums by Limp Bizkit and Rage Against the Machine claim the top spot, as does Korn's next release, Issues.

July 7, 1998 Barenaked Ladies release their fourth studio album, Stunt. It's the Canadian band's breakthrough record in the US, where it lands at #3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

May 16, 1998 The Dave Matthews Band go to #1 on the albums chart for the first time when Before These Crowded Streets debuts at the top spot, ending the Titanic soundtrack's 16-week berth at the top. Remarkably, their next six albums also debut at #1, a testament to their very loyal fans.

February 14, 1998 Apropos for Valentine's Day, Usher's "Nice & Slow" goes to #1 in the US. It's the first of his nine chart-toppers.

November 26, 1997 The day after his album Sevens is released, Garth Brooks lands 12 of the 14 songs from the album on the Country singles chart. The previous record for most charting singles from an album was held by Brooks' Fresh Horses with eight tracks.

August 30, 1997 After 11 weeks on top, "I'll Be Missing You," a tribute to "The Notorious B.I.G." by his producer/label boss Puff Daddy, cedes the top spot to "Mo Money Mo Problems," a posthumous single by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Puff.

June 17, 1997 Blink-182, a pop-punk trio from San Diego, release their major-label debut, Dude Ranch. The album boasts their first rock-radio hit, "Dammit," a breakup tune that blows out bassist Mark Hoppus' vocal chords.More

March 22, 1997 "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" by Puff Daddy goes to #1, the first of four chart-toppers in 1997 from his Bad Boy label. The others are "Hypnotize" and "Mo Money Mo Problems" by The Notorious B.I.G., and "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff, his tribute to B.I.G., who died on March 9, 1997.

December 7, 1996 Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" hits #1 in America for the first of 11 weeks.

June 1, 1996 Baddiel and Skinner and The Lightning Seeds' "Three Lions," the official song of the England Football team, hits #1 on the UK singles chart.

March 16, 1996 For the 16th (and final) consecutive week, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" is #1 in the US.

June 3, 1995 Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?," featured in the Johnny Depp movie Don Juan DeMarco, starts a five-week run at #1 on the US singles chart.

April 1, 1995 Tupac Shakur is in jail (serving time for sexual abuse), but his third album, Me Against the World, hits #1, where it stays for four weeks.

February 25, 1995 Madonna's "Take A Bow" hits #1 on the Hot 100 and stays for seven weeks. The song is produced by Babyface.

June 4, 1994 The soundtrack from the film The Crow hits #1 on the US Albums chart.

June 4, 1994 Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" starts a 15-week run at #1 on the UK singles chart.

April 23, 1994 Pink Floyd's album The Division Bell goes to #1 in the US, where it stays for four weeks.

August 7, 1993 Led by the single "Insane In The Brain," the West Coast rap trio Cypress Hill debut at #1 with their second album, Black Sunday. Along with Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg, it's one of just two rap albums to top the chart in 1993.

June 5, 1993 Toby Keith scores the first of his 20 #1 country hits when his first single, "Should've Been a Cowboy," reaches the top.

February 20, 1993 Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" from the soundtrack to The Bodyguard tops Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart for the 13th week.

July 25, 1992 Mary J. Blige's first single, "You Remind Me," hits #1 on the R&B chart, establishing her unique blend of "hip-hop soul." Her next single, "Real Love," tops the chart in October.

July 18, 1992 "Achy Breaky Heart," a #1 country hit from Billy Ray Cyrus, peaks at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

June 20, 1992 Mariah Carey's cover of the Jackson 5 classic "I'll Be There" goes to #1 in America. Recorded for her MTV Unplugged special, it's the first song from the MTV acoustic showcase to become a hit. A few months later, Eric Clapton has a hit with his Unplugged version of "Layla."

October 5, 1991 Guns N' Roses' Use Your Illusion II debuts at #1, followed by Use Your Illusion I on Billboard's albums chart.

June 1, 1991 Seal's self-titled debut album starts a 3-week run at #1 on the UK albums chart.

May 18, 1991 R.E.M. go to #1 in America with their seventh album, Out of Time, which features the tracks "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People."

June 16, 1990 The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," re-released in the Netherlands as a single, climbs to the top of the charts 24 years after its initial release.
