July 11, 1965

Weezer bass player Scott Shriner is born in Toledo, Ohio.

December 9, 1968

Brian Bell (rhythm guitarist/keyboardist for Weezer) is born in Iowa City, Iowa.

February 1, 1969

Patrick Wilson (drummer for Weezer) is born in Buffalo, New York. He starts drum lessons at age 15 after seeing Van Halen in concert.

June 13, 1970

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo is born in New York City. He is raised on an ashram (spiritual hermitage) in Pomfret, Connecticut before moving to Los Angeles and forming the band in 1992. Weezer quickly gain a local following and earn a record deal just a year later.

April 20, 1971

Bass player Mikey Welsh is born in Syracuse, New York. In 1998, he replaces Matt Sharp in Weezer, and is replaced by Scott Shriner in 2001.

June 25, 1993

Just a year after forming, Weezer sign with the major label DGC Records. Their self-titled debut album ("The Blue Album") is released the following year and takes off thanks to the hits "Buddy Holly" and "Undone - The Sweater Song."

May 10, 1994

Weezer release their self-titled debut (aka The Blue Album). It sells 90 copies the first week but picks up steam when "Undone - The Sweater Song" starts getting airplay. "Buddy Holly" becomes a hit on MTV, and the album eventually sells over 3 million copies.

June 24, 1994

Weezer release "Undone - The Sweater Song," the first single from their debut album, Weezer (aka The Blue Album). The song is about an emotional unraveling lead singer Rivers Cuomo was going through.

September 7, 1994

Weezer release their breakthrough single, "Buddy Holly," named for the rock and roll icon on what would have been his 58th birthday. It's featured on the band's debut album, Weezer (aka The Blue Album).

September 24, 1996

Weezer release their second album, the self-produced Pinkerton. Named after a character in Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, it's darker than their 1994 debut and doesn't include any hits. Weezer fans remain divided over whether it's a work of genius or a creative flop.

July 8, 1997

Weezer fan club founders Mykel Allan, 31, and her sister Carli, 29, are killed along with their younger sister, Trysta, in a car accident in Colorado on the way back from one of the band's shows. The girls, who had befriended many up-and-coming Los Angeles-based bands, are honored through many tribute songs, including Weezer's "Mykel and Carli" and Jimmy Eat World's "Hear You Me."

May 15, 2001

Weezer release their third album, which like their first, is called Weezer - it becomes known as "The Green Album" and their debut is called "The Blue Album." The Green Album comes five years after their previous album, Pinkerton, and is a lot brighter, getting the band back on the radio with songs like "Hash Pipe" and "Island In The Sun." It's not the last self-titled Weezer album - the Red, White, Teal and Black albums all follow.

July 18, 2001

Weezer release "Hash Pipe," the first single from Weezer (aka The Green Album). Described by frontman Rivers Cuomo as a "totally insane" song, it still gets plenty of airplay, although the title is a little too druggy for MTV, who display it as "H*** Pipe."

August 28, 2001

Weezer release "Island In The Sun," the second single from Weezer (aka The Green Album). It's a very tranquil song for the band, a stark contrast from the first single, "Hash Pipe." It becomes the most-licensed song in their catalog, showing up in The Simpsons, The Sopranos, and Trolls Band Together.

March 29, 2005

Weezer release "Beverly Hills," the lead single from their Make Believe album. The video is shot at the Playboy mansion, where they perform the song to a strange mix of Playboy bunnies and Weezer fans.

July 23, 2005

For the first time, Lollapalooza stays put, with the first of two shows at Grant Park in Chicago. Pixies, Billy Idol and Weezer all perform.

February 15, 2006

Thanks to download sales, Weezer's "Buddy Holly" is certified Gold (500,000 copies) 12 years after it was released. It wasn't sold as a single in America so fans would have to buy the album to get it.

June 8, 2006

Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo graduates from Harvard with a degree in English. He enrolled in 1995 after the band released their first album, growing a beard so he wouldn't be recognized. He took classes on and off between tours and recording, finally earning his degree 11 years later.

January 26, 2008

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo takes part in the Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra charity soccer match benefiting the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation in Carson, California.

Tom Delonge of blink-182 joins Rivers Cuomo on stage to sing "Undone - The Sweater Song" as Weezer open their Troublemaker tour in Lowell, Massachusetts.

December 6, 2009

Weezer's tour bus crashes, forcing them to cancel the rest of their tour. Frontman Rivers Cuomo is injured, but is back in action six weeks later.

October 8, 2011

Weezer bass player Mikey Welsh dies of an overdose-induced heart attack at a hotel in Chicago, Illinois, at age 40.

July 22, 2014

Weezer release "Back to the Shack," the lead single from Everything Will Be Alright in the End. The song finds the band reminiscing on their rise in the early '90s when they were the hot new band.

October 7, 2014

Weezer release their ninth studio album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. The band's first album on Republic Records, it marks the return of producer Ric Ocasek, who produced the band's 1994 debut album, The Blue Album, and their 2001 Green Album.

January 24, 2019

Weezer release The Teal Album, a collection of covers featuring their hit rendition of "Africa." Selections include "Take On Me," "No Scrubs" and "Billie Jean."

February 28, 2019

Weezer join the Fortnite universe with "Weezer World," a "Creative Island" where players can ride around on a hoverboard while listening to Weezer tunes. It's one of the first Fortnite musical collaborations; earlier in the month, Marshmello held a virtual concert. Weezer return in 2024 with "Sweat(er) City," which includes a unique weapon: a sweater yarn stun gun. (You know, because "The Sweater Song.")

Weezer and Fall Out Boy go head to head on Celebrity Family Feud, with FOB coming out on top.
