March 30, 1968

Celine Dion is born in Charlemagne, Quebec, the youngest of 14. She releases music in her native French throughout the '80s, building a huge following in Canada and France. In 1990, she sets her sights on America with her first English album, Unison, and she quickly becomes a star there as well.

June 11, 1981

13-year-old Celine Dion releases her first single, "Ce n'était qu'un reve," in her native Canada. It earns her a local following and leads the way for her debut album, La voix du bon Dieu, in November. For the rest of the decade, she records in her native French and becomes quite popular in Canada and across Europe. She starts recording in English at the start of the '90s.

April 30, 1988

Celine Dion wins the Eurovision Song Contest with her performance of the French song "Ne partez pas sans moi." She's from Canada but represents Switzerland at the contest because they asked her to. Already famous in France and Canada, the win earns her many new fans throughout Europe and sets the stage for her American breakthrough two years later.

April 2, 1990

After releasing eight studio albums in her native French, Celine Dion issues her first English-language album, Unison. The lead single, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," goes to #4, setting the stage for her American breakthrough.

August 21, 1993

For one week, standards outsell rap as the soundtrack to the hit romantic comedy Sleepless In Seattle knocks Cypress Hill's Black Sunday off the top of the Billboard 200. More

March 12, 1996

Celine Dion releases her biggest-selling album, Falling Into You. It includes her covers of "All By Myself" and "River Deep - Mountain High," as well as the hits "Because You Loved Me" and "It's All Coming Back to Me Now."

Phil Spector calls off a planned project to produce Celine Dion when they can't agree to terms.

Five weeks before the movie Titanic is released, Celine Dion issues her album Let's Talk About Love, featuring the theme song, "My Heart Will Go On." As the movie commandeers the popular culture, Dion's album rides in its wake, going on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide.More

Celine Dion releases "Be The Man," her first single in Japanese. It is released in Japan only and is the theme to the Japanese TV drama Eve.

November 12, 1997

More than $2 million is raised at the Neil Bogart Memorial Fund's 1997 Children's Choice Award dinner honoring Grammy-winning producer/songwriter David Foster. Performers and guests include Az Yet, All-4-One, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman and Cindy Crawford.

The Titanic soundtrack is released. It contains just one song with vocals - Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" - but sells well over 10 million copies and goes to #1 in most countries thanks to the runaway success of the film.More

Celine Dion is inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame during the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Gold Ribbon Awards gala in Montreal. Dion joins Bryan Adams and Anne Murray for the accolade.

January 25, 2001

Celine Dion gives birth to her first child, son René-Charles. To spend more time raising him, she stops touring, and in 2003 takes a residence at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that runs through 2007.

September 28, 2001

Celine Dion and Peter Gabriel perform at an American Red Cross benefit concert at Montreal's Molson Centre for victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

March 26, 2002

Celine Dion releases the album A New Day Has Come, her first as a mom (son René-Charles was born a year earlier). I goes to #1 in many territories, including the US, UK, and Canada.

March 25, 2003

Celine Dion begins her Las Vegas residency with the show A New Day... at Caesars Palace. With elaborate sets and a full dance troupe, it ushers in a new era of highly theatrical Vegas shows headlined by huge stars. Shania Twain, Elton John and Britney Spears all follow this path.

December 15, 2007

After 717 performances, Celine Dion wraps up her A New Day... residency in Las Vegas. Launched in 2003, the show was supposed to run three years but was so successful it ran for five. With a gross of $385 million, it sets a record for a Vegas residency and leads other artists to follow suit in Sin City, including Britney Spears, Elton John, Adele and U2.

Celine Dion gives birth to twin boys Eddy (named after Eddy Marnay, who produced her early albums) and Nelson (named for Nelson Mandela). Like she did after her first child was born in 2001, Dion takes a Las Vegas residency so she won't have to tour and can spend more time raising her kids.

March 15, 2011

Celine Dion returns to Caesars Palace on the Ides Of March to start her second Las Vegas residency, this one titled Celine. Like her first run from 2003-2007, it's a huge hit, ending in 2019 after 427 shows.

December 8, 2022

Celine Dion reveals that she suffers from a rare neurological disease called Stiff Person Syndrome that can cause debilitating spasms. She's forced to cancel the rest of her tour.

July 26, 2024

Celine Dion makes a spectacular return with a performance of "Hymne À L'amour" from the Eiffel Tower at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. It's her first performance since 2020, when she was sidelined with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.
